BANK HOTEL

THE FRENCH CONNECTIONAN INNOVATIVE PATTERN WAS THE PERFECT FIT FOR THE HOTEL BAR

Since its opening in August, Bank Hotel at Nybroviken in Stockholm has been fully booked. The grand old bank from 1910 was revived with 115 hotel rooms and suites, two bars and a wonderful dining room with a glass roof and a ceiling height of six meters. Features and interiors have been preserved in the boutique hotel, and the new décor shows great respect for the building’s past. One of the interior designers behind the transformation is Jonathan Söderblom from Stureplansgruppen, the Stockholm company which also runs the hotel. “Kasthall was involved in choosing the first rug and carpet samples for the rooms. But it was only when we were nearing the end of the project that I had time to discuss my ideas with Mary-Ellen Axelsson from Kasthall, about what kind of rugs I was really after.”

NEW COLLABORATION

Jonathan wanted to find rugs and wall-to-wall carpets that would go well with both classic and modern features of the interior. He also wanted them to enhance the luxurious feel of the hotel, and at the same time, be durable enough for the heavy wear and tear of a hotel environment.

Jonathan and Mary-Ellen got to know each other well when they worked together at the Bank Hotel project. Now, Kasthall and Stureplansgruppen are collaborating on a nightclub in Stockholm.

“When I met Mary-Ellen, she immediately understood our needs and was able to provide the right expertise. We soon developed a close collaboration, which made it easy to find rugs that were right for Bank Hotel in terms of purpose, quality and feel.”

PAPILLON

“OUR NEW PATTERN HAD THE WORKING NAME PAPILLON. IT WAS FUN THAT THE HOTEL BAR WAS LATER NAMED PAPILLON.”  - Mary-Ellen Axelsson, Kasthall

One of Jonathan’s assignments at Bank Hotel was to create a bar with a feminine atmosphere. Together with Mary-Ellen, it was decided that the bar would have a patterned wall-to-wall carpet from Kasthall. Mary-Ellen found inspiration for the pattern from antique French wallpapers that she liked.

“We had to create a new pattern from scratch. I knew that Ida-Marie All, who works with production at our factory in Kinna, had illustrated some lovely patterns which I had seen on Instagram. So she helped us to create the artwork, which was then sent to Kasthall’s design department, which in turn created a repeat pattern.”

After that, the carpet was printed digitally. A new printing technique of 100dpi enabled a final result with distinct floral patterns without color limitations, on a deep forest green base with butterflies flying from flower to flower.
