KASTHALL PUTS RARITIES ON DISPLAY AT NEW SUMMER EXHIBITION

On June 10, the unique summer exhibition Kasthall – A Historic Rugmaker Through Time opened at Rydals Museum in Mark municipality. The exhibition continues until September 2, and puts a number of unique sketches and rugs on display for the first time.

This is the second time that Kasthall and Rydals Museum have come together. The first time was in 1989, when Kasthall celebrated its 100th birthday with an exhibition at the museum. This year’s summer exhibition reflects Kasthall’s journey from its start in 1889 as a local rug factory through to the global design brand that Kasthall is today.

Visitors to the exhibition can see original sketches from many of Kasthall’s best-known designers, including Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg, Ingrid Dessau, Viola Gråsten and Astrid Sampe. Around 20 Kasthall classics from each era of the company will be on display – from 50s and 60s wall-to-wall rugs to a new design classic from this year’s big collaboration with British designer Ilse Crawford.

113-YEAR-OLD RUG DESIGNED BY ASTRID SAMPE

The oldest rug on display is a 133-year-old rug that was supplied to the farm Påtorps Säteri in Fristad, Sweden in 1905 and lay there right up until 2005. Since then it has been in Kasthall’s archive and will now be on display to the public for the first time. The exhibition also features an Astrid Sampe rug created for the library at the UN’s skyscraper in New York. The rug was ordered personally by Dag Hammarskjöld during his time as Secretary-General.

The exhibition is curated by Kasthall’s product developer Peter Otell, who has worked at Kasthall for 22 years.

“We hope the exhibition will make those who live in the Mark region feel proud of this nearly 130-year-old company that is still just as relevant today as it was then. That they will feel proud of this craftsmanship that has endured. We also hope that international and long-distance visitors who otherwise only come across Kasthall in interiors magazines will get an opportunity to experience and understand Kasthall’s long history,” says Peter Odell, curator of the exhibition Kasthall – A Historic Rugmaker Through Time.
