Kasthall adds a significant milestone to its sustainability journey with Fasad – a rug collection that rethinks the potential of recycled wool. In collaboration with the design office of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Sir David Chipperfield, Kasthall presents two new rug designs that are both timely and timeless, designed for today and made to endure for years to come.
With Fasad, Kasthall is creating what it believes to be the world’s first rug collection using recycled post-consumer wool. The collection explores new possibilities for a material that has long been central to the company’s identity and craftsmanship.
The Fasad collection includes two designs, Uno and Duo. Both are inspired by the brick façade of the Kasthall factory in Kinna, Sweden. Uno presents a more uniform expression, while Duo features a structured pattern built from an even number of blocks. The designs are offered in a natural, subdued color palette with subtle glints of linen.
The development process required close collaboration between David Chipperfield Design and the Kasthall team at the factory in Kinna. Numerous iterations were tested both in the design studio and on the looms to achieve the desired balance between structure, texture and material performance.
“We wanted to create something beautiful and elegant with a decent but strong personality. The concept of layering to create a balanced structure in the rug was key to this,” explains Dirk Gschwind, Managing Director of David Chipperfield Design and creative partner on the project.
For Kasthall, the project represents an important step in its ongoing sustainability work. “For the first time, Kasthall is using material that contains post-consumer waste from outside parties,” says CEO Mirkku Kullberg. “The environmental benefits this delivers and the potential it holds can’t be underestimated.”
