Sweden lounge at the embassy

Washington D.C., USA

Inside the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C., the Sweden Lounge is a meeting place dedicated to Swedish design and craftsmanship. Curated by TAF Studio, the space brings together rugs, furniture, and materials from leading Swedish companies, creating an environment where aesthetics, function, and sustainability meet.

The ambition of the project was to present Sweden as a design nation while creating a warm and inviting setting for meetings, conversations, and cultural exchange. The lounge reflects Sweden’s long-standing position in the international design landscape, where functional clarity, timeless simplicity, and innovation are closely connected.

The interior highlights the breadth of Swedish design, featuring pieces created by renowned designers and produced by companies with strong roots in Swedish craftsmanship and manufacturing. Many of the participating brands continue to produce their furniture in their own factories in Sweden, emphasizing the close relationship between design, material knowledge, and production. Kasthall contributes to the lounge with two rugs that introduce textile depth and help anchor the interior within the overall architectural composition.
Nature served as a central source of inspiration. The colour palette of the lounge draws from three characteristic Swedish stone types, granite, gneiss, and Kolmården marble, creating a calm and cohesive atmosphere that harmonizes with the architecture of the embassy building designed by Gert Wingårdh.

The result is a contemporary lounge that reflects the values often associated with Swedish design: a human-centered approach, respect for materials, and a balance between tradition and innovation.
