Ingrid Dessau

Kasthall Design Studio

Ingrid Dessau was a pioneer in Sweden’s modern textile and design history. As a designer at Kasthall between 1954 and 1978, she shaped the company’s visual language and laid the foundation for its modern design tradition.

With roots in southern Swedish folk craft and a background in textile studies, Dessau designed patterns for rugs, fabrics and embroidery, often inspired by nature such as flowers, leaves, water and stones, translated into modern textile patterns.

At Kasthall’s factory in Kinna, she combined traditional craft knowledge with a curiosity for new weaving techniques, exploring how colour, pattern and structure could create expressive yet balanced surfaces.

Through her work at Kasthall, Ingrid Dessau defined an approach to rug design where craftsmanship, experimentation and inspiration from nature come together. This legacy continues to influence the company today.
