On a visit to Paris in the 1980s, Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra, acquired a vintage 1954 Antony chair by Jean Prouvé. “For me, Jean Prouvé was the French counterpart to Charles and Ray Eames. What they have in common is the combination of structural honesty and an ensuing creative expression of timeless beauty,” Fehlbaum explained.
That moment marked the beginning of an intensive collecting program, one that has since culminated in the Vitra Design Museum holding the world’s most extensive collection of Prouvé furniture and objects. And in 1999, a dialogue with the Prouvé family led to an agreement granting Vitra the rights to produce Prouvé furniture.

Crafted from sheet steel, many of Jean Prouvé’s furniture pieces found their way into homes, schools and public spaces. To protect the material from corrosion and add warmth, Prouvé developed a color palette that evolved according to each project and its context.
Form, material and color interact in this Vitra showroom with Kasthall's rugs becoming a central part of the spatial experience.
