Misshumasshu: Kasthall Meets Dining in Central Stockholm

When Misshumasshu reopened in the historic Birger Jarl Passage, it did so with clear sense of direction. Designed by architect Maja Bernvill, the interior brings together form and function, culture and craft – and a focus on materials that stand the test of time.

In the chambre séparée, the only carpeted area in the restaurant, the rug comes from Kasthall's Vichy collection in the colorway Peach Mango. It picks up the red tones and connects them with the dark wood. The check feels familiar in a Scandinavian context, something often seen in Swedish interiors, and it works well with the fan-shaped Japanese pattern in the flooring.

"A carpet in a restaurant needs to stay attractive over time, visually and physically," says Maja Bernvill. "That's why I chose Kasthall. I also liked how it bridges the Swedish and Japanese elements."

The new Misshumasshu spans 800 square meters with six-meter-high ceilings and a glass roof that fills the space with daylight. Wrapped in red and shaped by a mix of sculptural elements and intimate seating zones, the result is both bold and generous.

The custom-made tables take inspiration from the way a tablecloth drapes, while the choice of material – heat-treated solid ash – adds honesty and permanence. Framing the chambre séparée is a curtain from Astrid, Kasthall's sister company.
