Presented during Milan Design Week 2026, La Stanza by David Chipperfield explores how a single structural system can define space. Developed for the hospitality context, the project translates an open 6×6 construction into a minimal living unit, adaptable, repeatable and precise.
At the centre of the installation, Lav by Kasthall is developed as an integral part of this system. Rather than acting as a standalone element, the rug contributes to the spatial logic of the room — reinforcing structure, proportion and material presence.
The project is based on a clear principle: that furnishing should not simply organise space, but define it. Through a modular framework, multiple functions are brought together within one architectural gesture, allowing the room to adapt across contexts while maintaining a consistent identity.
References to open and multifunctional design, from Bruno Munari to Victor Papanek, inform the approach. The result is a restrained and coherent environment where structure, material and use are closely connected.
Within this context, Lav becomes part of the architectural language. Its materiality and placement support the overall composition, contributing to a space defined not by individual objects, but by the relationships between them.
