Sustainability and social responsibility have been woven into Kasthall’s identity from the very beginning. More than 130 years ago, the company’s support of the local community – including neighbouring dyehouses and suppliers – established a foundation of responsibility that continues to guide the business today.
Sustainability at Kasthall is a structured, measurable, and continuously evolving process, built on verified data, responsible sourcing, and long-term performance.
Our framework is based on:
- Annual measurement of greenhouse gas emissions
- Science-based reduction targets
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology
- Verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
- Documented material composition and certifications
- Clear governance and supplier requirements
We distinguish between verified results, approved targets, and long-term ambitions to ensure transparent and credible communication in line with EU Green Claims.
A Structured Approach Across Six Focus Areas
1. Conscious Consumption
Durability is central to how we design and produce rugs. By extending product lifespan, we reduce the need for replacement and lower resource use over time.
Rugs are made from carefully selected wool and linen using refined techniques, supported by a 10-year warranty. Production is primarily made-to-order, reducing overproduction, while a low reclamation rate reflects high quality and precision. Products are repaired or resold rather than discarded, supported by clear care instructions.
2. Preserving Natural Resources
We focus on responsible material sourcing and efficient production.
- 95% of wool sourced from New Zealand
- Linen sourced from France under Masters of Linen™ and European Flax™ standards
- All yarns certified according to OEKO-Tex® Standard 100
Selected collections include recycled wool, combining recycled and virgin fibers to maintain durability. Surplus materials are reused, and returned products are resold to reduce waste.
Weaving and tufting in Kinna use no water or chemicals. Dyeing is carried out by European partners in compliance with EU REACH regulations. Product-level testing ensures compliance with indoor air quality standards.
3. Climate Protection
Kasthall measures and reports emissions annually in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Approved targets by 2030:
- 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions
- 52% reduction in Scope 3 emissions (relative to value added)
Most emissions occur in Scope 3, primarily from raw materials and supply chain processes. Reduction efforts focus on energy efficiency, renewable sourcing, and supplier engagement.
4. Caring for People
We aim to provide safe and responsible working conditions across our operations and supply chain.
This includes:
- Safe workplaces and continuous training
- A structured Code of Conduct for suppliers
- Ongoing monitoring and improvement
Our approach is based on due diligence and long-term partnerships.
5. Good Governance
Sustainability is integrated into decision-making and governance.
We work with:
- Public policies and defined targets
- Measurable indicators
- Annual monitoring and review
Clear distinctions between performance, targets, and development ensure transparency.
6. Life Cycle Assessment & Verified Data
We use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate environmental impact across the full product lifecycle.
This data forms the basis for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which will be published for in-house products from 2026. All EPDs follow international standards and are third-party verified.
Environmental data is communicated at product level to support informed decision-making.
