Located within Nordiska museet on Djurgården in Stockholm, Sofis salong is a restored gathering space dedicated to meetings, events, and cultural exchange.
Designed by Note Design Studio under the artistic direction of Vanessa Gandy, the salon pays tribute to Sofi Hazelius, co-founder of the museum.
The room occupies the museum’s southern wing, originally envisioned as a café in architect Isak Gustaf Clason’s drawings from 1897. Characterized by tall arched windows facing three directions, the space is filled with daylight and organized in a calm three-part symmetry that reflects the building’s historic architecture.
In collaboration with Nordiska museet, Kasthall developed a custom tufted rug in wool and linen designed specifically for the space. The rug introduces an organically shifting pile that evokes the surrounding landscape, as if nature itself has entered the room. Beneath a conference table, a woven rug in recycled wool introduces a speckled grey, black, and white palette inspired by traditional wool socks found in the museum’s collections – knitted from whatever yarn was available, regardless of colour.
Together with carefully crafted furniture and textiles, the rug contributes warmth, acoustic comfort, and material depth, creating an elegant salon where history and contemporary design meet.
